Chapter 19 - The Sentence

The judge rejected the first deal because it treated the forged loan like an isolated event.

It wasn’t.

There were years of planning.

Multiple identities.

Property fraud.

Evidence destruction.

The revised plea carried real consequences.

Gwendolyn stood in court and admitted what she did.

She did not look at me.

She looked at Chloe.

That hurt Chloe more.

The judge imposed prison time, followed by probation and restitution obligations.

Not decades.

Enough.

Dad received civil penalties and a suspended sentence tied to full cooperation and repayment.

He accepted it without complaint.

After court, Gwendolyn asked to speak to Chloe.

Chloe said no.

She asked to speak to Dad.

He said no.

Then she asked for me.

I almost refused.

Instead, I gave her five minutes.

Gwendolyn said, “You got the house.”

“I already owned most of it.”

“You got the money.”

“It was mine.”

“You got Samuel.”

I laughed softly.

“No.”

She frowned.

“I don’t have Dad. Dad has himself.”

She leaned closer.

“You think you’re better than me because you bought that mansion?”

“No.”

“Then why did you hide it?”

“I didn’t want you measuring me by money.”

She smiled bitterly.

“And now?”

“Now I know you were measuring me anyway.”

The guard signaled time.

Gwendolyn’s face changed.

For a moment, she looked tired instead of dangerous.

“Did Elaine hate me?”

I stood.

“She barely knew you.”

That was the answer she deserved.

Outside, Chloe waited.

Dad stood farther away.

Not together.

Not enemies.

Just people learning how to exist without the woman who had organized their lives around conflict.

Chloe asked, “Do you feel better?”

“Some.”

“Happy?”

“Not about this.”

“The studio at the old house opens next month.”

“It’s not a studio.”

“The Elaine Room.”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

“I volunteered to paint.”

“You hate painting.”

“I’m trying character development.”

I laughed.

That felt better than winning.

Then Dad walked over holding a small cedar box.

“I found this in storage.”

My breath caught.

Another box.

He handed it to me.

Inside was one final letter from Mom.
