Chapter 3 - My Name on Their Loan

The signature looked like mine.
It wasn’t.
The consent approved a $780,000 home-equity loan against the entire property.
Borrower: Samuel Morgan.
Co-borrower: Gwendolyn Morgan.
Beneficiary business: Chloe Rose Media LLC.
I read that line twice.
“Chloe has a company?”
Maya turned her laptop toward me.
“Registered nine months ago.”
“Did you take out a loan against the house?”
Silence.
“Dad.”
“It was temporary.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Did you sign my name?”
“No.”
“Did Gwendolyn?”
“Paige, please don’t start this.”
I laughed.
“You borrowed almost eight hundred thousand dollars against property I own and I’m starting something?”
“Chloe’s business is doing well.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
There it was.
“Did you know she needed my approval?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell her she didn’t have it?”
Nothing.
I closed my eyes.
“Dad, answer me.”
“I thought you’d understand.”
“You didn’t ask.”
“You have money.”
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
Not because it was false.
Because it explained everything.
My success had become permission.
Apparently they decided comfortable meant available.
Maya sent a fraud notice to the lender before lunch.
At 1:12 p.m., the bank froze further draws.
At 1:40, Gwendolyn called me.
“You humiliated this family.”
“I froze a fraudulent loan.”
“You could destroy Chloe’s launch.”
“Then Chloe shouldn’t have built it on my signature.”
“She didn’t know.”
“Did you?”
Silence.
I waited.
Gwendolyn said, “Come home and we’ll discuss this like adults.”
I looked around my hillside kitchen.
“I am home.”
May you like
Then she said the one thing that told me this was bigger than a bad loan.
“You have no idea what your mother promised me.”
