Chapter 1 - The Third Badge

The woman on the marble floor looked exhausted. Dust streaked her coat, and a thin line of blood ran from her temple where a luggage cart had clipped her outside.
Victoire Delmas still pointed toward the doors.
"Get her out."
Two security officers moved.
Elise Morel opened her canvas bag.
Heavy metal. Navy-blue lanyard. Two engraved words.
VIP - FOUNDER.
Antoine Girard, the duty manager, went pale.
"Where did you get that?"
Elise stood slowly.
"My father made three."
Victoire laughed once. "That proves nothing."
Elise walked to the round brass plate built into the front desk.
She pressed the badge against it.
A low tone rolled through the lobby.
The elevators stopped. Doors locked. Computer screens flashed black, then returned with a single message.
FOUNDER AUTHORITY VERIFIED.
Elise faced Victoire.
"No one leaves until I've seen the accounts."
"You can't do this."
"I just did."
Antoine swallowed. "Ms. Morel... are you really-"
"Open six months of operating records."
Victoire stepped between them. "Sébastien handles finance."
"Then he can explain why payroll was late twice, why three renovation invoices use the same bank account, and why my family's hotel suddenly owes four point eight million euros to a company that did not exist last year."
Antoine stared at her.
That reaction told Elise he had never seen the whole picture.
For two months, every question she sent her cousin Sébastien received the same answer: Everything is under control.
So she returned without warning, dressed like an ordinary traveler, to see for herself. It looked worse than she feared.
Antoine entered his credentials.
The records opened.
Then he whispered, "That's impossible."
Elise moved beside him.
On the screen was a transfer approved at 3:12 that morning.
Authorization level: FOUNDER.
Elise touched the badge still hanging from her hand.
"Who approved this?"

Antoine looked at her.
"According to the system... you did."
