Chapter 20 - The Badge Goes Back in the Drawer

Six months later, the Domaine d'Azur looked almost the same.
The chandeliers still glowed over the marble lobby and the sea still flashed blue beyond the terrace.
But behind the beauty, everything had changed.
The independent audit recovered more than three million euros and froze the south bluff transaction before closing.
The board removed Sébastien permanently.
Marc Dumas faced fraud, conspiracy, and financial-crime charges. The investigation into René Morel's death remained open, supported by the preserved bottle and old pharmacy records.
Victoire cooperated with investigators and still faced charges for her role in the fraud. Elise did not ask anyone to spare her.
The unpaid staff received back wages first. No executive bonuses. No new lobby furniture.
Mireille became employee ombudsman. Antoine became operations director. Camille earned a promotion and was slowly learning she could disagree with the owner without losing her job.
Luc rebuilt the security system with modern controls and no secret overrides.
One quiet morning, Elise stood in her father's archive holding the third Founder badge.
Heavy metal.
Navy lanyard.
VIP - FOUNDER.
For twenty-two years, people had treated it like a symbol of power. Elise understood it now as an emergency brake.
She placed the badge inside the wall safe.
Then stopped.
A small envelope lay beneath the drawer, one she had missed before.
Her name was written on it.
Inside was one final note from René.
If you ever have to use the badge, I failed to build a company that could survive without fear. Do better than I did.
Elise sat down.
For a long time, she said nothing.
Then she smiled through tears.
"I'll try."
That afternoon, she crossed the lobby without security or a board escort. A new receptionist did not recognize her.
"Checking in?" he asked.
Elise looked around at the hotel her family had nearly lost.
"Something like that."
Behind the desk, the old brass Founder plate had been removed.
In its place was a small sign for employees.
IF SOMETHING IS WRONG, SAY IT.
Elise read it once.
Then kept walking.

The third badge was back in the drawer.
This time, she hoped no one would ever need it again.
