Chapter 17 - The Clause Nobody Read

Luc placed the black case on the desk.
Inside was an original corporate charter from twenty-two years earlier.
Marc rolled his eyes. "Ancient paperwork."
"Founding paperwork," Luc corrected.
He opened to Article Nine.
The Founder protocol had never been merely a building-security tool.
If activated after verified evidence of internal fraud, it temporarily froze any board action involving property transfer until an independent audit was completed.
Sébastien laughed. "That clause expired."
"No," Luc said. "You removed it from the digital bylaws. You never amended the notarized charter."
Marc stopped smiling.
Elise looked at the red binder.
"So the south bluff cannot be pledged while Founder review is active."
"Correct."
Marc snapped, "Founder review was terminated."
Luc held up the fourth badge.
"By a counterfeit credential."
He had already run the chip analysis.
The termination event came from the forged badge marked VD, paired with Sébastien's executive token.
Not Elise's.
Antoine's voice came through the lobby speakers from the server room.
"I have the log."
Sébastien turned toward the elevators.
Vincent blocked him.
Marc began packing documents.
Elise stopped him.
"Leaving?"
"I am not your employee."
"No. You're the banker who tried to close a fraudulent loan using forged collateral."
"Careful."
"I have spent all night being careful."
Sirens sounded outside.
Victoire flinched.
Police entered the lobby.
For one second, Elise believed it was over.
Then Marc handed an officer a document.
The officer read it.
Looked at Elise.
And said, "Ms. Morel, we need you to come with us."
Sébastien smiled.
"For what?" Elise asked.
"Suspected unlawful detention, destruction of company records, and financial fraud."
May you like
The trap had one final layer.
They had called the police first.
