Chapter 17 - THE CHILD WHO WOULD NOT RUN

Thomas moved before the gun fired.
He tackled Madison sideways.
The bullet struck the fence.
Rachel threw the skillet.
It hit Marla’s wrist with a sound that made her scream.
The pistol landed in the grass.
Thomas grabbed it.
“Don’t move.”
Marla froze.
Blood ran down her hand.
Sirens were already approaching. Ruiz had placed a silent alarm on the property after the earlier threats, and the broken window had triggered it.
Marla looked toward the road.
Then back at Thomas.
“You think this ends with me?”
“No,” Thomas said. “But you end here.”
Police surrounded the house. Neil survived the shot and confessed within two hours: he had been paid fifty thousand dollars to accept Thomas’s body quickly, skip standard verification, and keep the coffin closed overnight.
“But you opened it,” Ruiz said.
Neil nodded.
“Rachel insisted.”
“And when Thomas showed signs of life?”
“I didn’t see any.”
“Madison did.”
Neil looked down.
“She saved him.”
Marla admitted falsifying transfers, feeding information to Mercer, and helping schedule Thomas’s collapse under Vivian’s orders.
“Why Madison?” Ruiz asked.
“She heard too much.”
Rachel watched the interview with Thomas beside her.
He squeezed her hand.
“She’ll never get near Madison again.”
Rachel wanted to believe that was the end.
Then Ruiz entered the observation room with a new file.
“We found the original hospital medication log.”
Thomas looked up.
“And?”
“Someone altered the doses after your collapse.”
“Mercer?”
“No.”
“Marla?”
“No.”
Ruiz placed a staff photograph on the table.
Dr. Samuel Whitaker.
Rachel stared.
“The cardiologist?”
Ruiz nodded.
“He lied when he said someone canceled his consult.”
Thomas’s face emptied of color.
“Sam has treated me for three years.”
May you like
Ruiz opened the file.
“And he signed the second declaration of death.”
