Chapter 2 - DECLARED DEAD TWICE

Chaos tore through the funeral home.

Someone knocked over a flower stand. Madison screamed when two paramedics lifted her out of the coffin. Rachel grabbed Thomas’s face in both hands.

“Tom? Tom, can you hear me?”

His eyelids did not move.

But the cardiac monitor did.

A weak rhythm crawled across the screen.

One paramedic looked at the other.

“What the hell?”

The funeral director, Neil Pritchard, kept repeating the same sentence.

“He was certified. He was certified.”

Rachel turned on him.

“Then someone certified a living man as dead.”

Thomas was rushed back to St. Matthew’s, where he had supposedly died forty-eight hours earlier. Detective Elena Ruiz arrived before midnight.

“This becomes a criminal investigation the second we prove someone falsified a death declaration,” she said.

Rachel stared through the ICU glass.

“Prove?”

Ruiz kept her voice calm. “Your husband had no pulse documented for fourteen minutes. Two physicians signed the record.”

“Then the record is wrong.”

“Maybe.”

“Not maybe.”

Madison sat wrapped in a hospital blanket, holding Thomas’s wedding ring. The funeral home had removed it earlier. She turned it slowly between her fingers.

“Mom?”

Rachel crouched.

“What is it?”

“Dad squeezed me.”

“When?”

“In the box.”

Rachel swallowed hard.

“He squeezed twice.”

Before Rachel could answer, Dr. Samuel Whitaker stepped into the hallway. He had been Thomas’s cardiologist for three years.

His face looked wrong.

Not shocked.

Afraid.

“Rachel,” he said quietly, “I need to tell you something before the police pull the hospital logs.”

Ruiz turned toward him.

“What?”

Whitaker looked at the detective, then back at Rachel.

“The night Thomas was declared dead, I was called to the ICU because his vitals were behaving strangely.”

Rachel’s hands went cold.

“And?”

“I never made it upstairs.”

“Why not?”

“Someone canceled the consult using my credentials.”

Ruiz’s expression changed.

“Who had access?”

Whitaker hesitated.

Then the ICU alarm began screaming.

Inside the room, Thomas’s heart rate shot upward.

His eyes opened.

And the first word he forced through dry, cracked lips was not Rachel’s name.

It was:

“Daniel.”
