Chapter 18 - ONE DINNER

Their first dinner was not romantic. At least, not at first. Naomi chose a small Italian restaurant where nobody knew the Whitmore name. Ethan arrived without a driver.
He looked proud of himself. âYou drove?â âYes.â âCongratulations.â âI even parked.â âYouâre growing.â He laughed. For two hours they talked about ordinary things. Bad coffee.
Naomiâs childhood in New Mexico. Ethanâs secret love of terrible action films. Then the conversation became quieter. âAre you afraid of this?â he asked.
Naomi knew what he meant. She continued. âIn protection work, people needed me because something bad was happening. After a while, I started thinking love felt the same way.â Ethan nodded slowly.
âI donât need you to rescue me.â âGood.â âIâd like you around.â âThatâs different.â âI know.â Naomi smiled. Outside, snow began falling. When Ethan walked her to her car, he did not kiss her. He waited.
At the door, Naomi said, âYou can kiss me.â He blinked. âYouâre terrifying.â âSo Iâve heard.â He kissed her gently. No cameras. No ballroom.
Just two people standing beneath a cheap restaurant awning while snow landed on their coats. Months later, Vanessa was sentenced. Community service. Probation.
Restitution. Mandatory counseling. Some people online complained it was too light. Others thought public disgrace was punishment enough.
Naomi stopped reading comments. Justice was not an audience vote. Then one morning a package arrived at Whitmore House. No return address.

I WAS WRONG. - V Naomi closed the box. She did not forgive everything. But for the first time, she believed Vanessa might actually be learning.
