Chapter 3 - SMALL CRUELTIES

Vanessa never began with anything obvious. She preferred small humiliations. A wet towel dropped on a freshly made bed. A tray returned because the blueberries were “ugly.” A lipstick stain deliberately pressed onto a white pillowcase ten minutes after Naomi changed it.

Then came the diamond earring. Vanessa called the house manager downstairs. “My earring is missing.” Naomi stood quietly beside the dresser. “It was here before she cleaned.” The accusation was clear.

Ethan entered halfway through. “What happened?” Vanessa folded her arms. “One of my earrings disappeared.” Naomi crouched, reached beneath the dresser and pulled it out. “It rolled under.” She placed it on the vanity.

“You should pay more attention.” Naomi straightened. “I wasn’t the one who lost it.” Silence. Ethan looked down to hide a smile. Vanessa saw it.

Her face hardened. “Don’t confuse access with belonging.” Naomi lowered her eyes. Not from submission. From restraint.

That evening, Ethan found her in the pantry. “I’m sorry.” “You didn’t accuse me.” “I should have stopped her.” Naomi stacked plates. “You’re marrying her. “Do you dislike her?” Naomi paused.

“I don’t know her well enough to dislike her.” “That sounded diplomatic.” “It was.” Ethan sighed. “Sometimes I don’t know her either.” Naomi looked at him then. For the first time, she saw fear behind his frustration. Not fear of Vanessa physically.
