Chapter 12 - THE OLD INSTINCT

Police breached the warehouse. Naomi stayed behind the tactical line. For exactly twelve seconds. Then she saw Lily.
A side door opened and a young woman stumbled into the corridor with tape around her wrists. A man grabbed her from behind. Naomi moved before anyone could stop her. The man raised a pistol.
Naomi knocked the weapon arm aside, trapped his elbow and drove him into the wall. The gun fell. She kicked it away. The man swung wildly.
No unnecessary strike. No rage. Only control. Police took over.
Lily collapsed against Naomi. âI said I would.â Lily started crying. So did Naomi. For years, Philadelphia had lived inside her as failure.
Now, for the first time, the memory changed. She had saved Lily then. Outside, Ethan waited beside an ambulance. When Naomi appeared, he did not touch her.
He simply asked, âAre you okay?â She nodded. âLily is.â âThat wasnât what I asked.â Naomi looked at him. âI think I might be.â Mercer was arrested that night. But he also revealed something else.
Vanessa had paid him to manufacture evidence after the bracelet incident. Fake messages. Edited photographs. A claim that Naomi had been stalking Ethan.

Then Mercer showed investigators one final file. An audio recording. Vanessaâs voice. âIf she wonât leave, make Ethan afraid of her.â Another voice asked, âHow far?â Vanessa answered, âFar enough that no one ever lets her near this family again.â Ethan closed the laptop.
Across the room, Vanessaâs attorney stopped taking notes. Because this was no longer embarrassment. It was conspiracy. And the woman who had kicked a maid in front of three hundred people was about to discover that one public mistake had opened the door to every private one.
