Chapter 19 - THE BALLROOM AGAIN

One year after the disastrous engagement party, Whitmore House hosted another event. This time the ballroom was filled with staff, community leaders and survivors supported by a new workplace-safety foundation. Naomi had helped design it. No white roses.

No imported silk. No coronation. Richard stood at the microphone. “Tonight, I would like it remembered for something better.” He announced a fund providing legal and emergency support to domestic workers, service employees and security staff facing abuse.

Then he asked Naomi to speak. She hated speeches. Margaret pushed her toward the stage. “Go.” Naomi stood beneath the same chandeliers where Vanessa had kicked her.

The cameras. The gasp. The ankle in her hand. Then she looked at the room now.

“The answer is simple. I could have.” A few people smiled. “But being able to hurt someone and choosing not to are two different kinds of strength.” She paused. “I spent years believing strength meant being ready for danger.

I know better now.” She looked toward Ethan. Telling the truth. Asking for help. Refusing to become cruel just because someone is cruel to you.” Applause rose slowly.

Then loudly. Ethan met her near the staircase. “You were good.” “I hated every second.” “I know.” He handed her a small box. Naomi stared.

“Ethan.” “Relax.” Inside was not a ring. It was a key. “I bought a place downtown.” “That’s nice.” “I thought maybe eventually—if you wanted—we could choose somewhere together.” Naomi closed the box. “No surprise mansion?” “No.” “No three hundred guests?” “Absolutely not.” “No silver heels?” “Never again.” She laughed.

Then kissed him. Across the ballroom, Richard whispered to Margaret, “Think he’ll marry her?” Margaret sipped champagne. “If he’s smart, he’ll let her decide.” Naomi heard them anyway. She turned.

“I heard that.” Margaret smiled. “I know.”
