Chapter 17 - What Charles Stole

Charles did not deny it.
He sat in the district attorney’s interview room with both hands flat on the table.
“Yes,” he said. “Claire is mine.”
Julian stared through the glass.
Leo stood beside him.
Maya and Rosa waited behind them.
Charles continued. “Eleanor and I had an affair before Anna died. She told Miles the baby was his because she needed Miles loyal.”
“Why hide Claire?” the detective asked.
“Because Eleanor was Adrian’s daughter. If the board learned I had gotten her pregnant while I was moving money through Adrian-related accounts, every transaction would be examined.”
“And Anna?”
Charles lowered his head. “She found out.”
“You cut her brakes?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Charles looked toward the mirror as though he could see Julian through it.
“Miles arranged it. Eleanor approved it. I knew they were talking about stopping Anna, and I did nothing.”
Julian closed his eyes.
Leo said, “That is enough.”
Julian looked at him.
“He let her die.”
“Yes.”
“He’s my brother.”
Leo’s voice was flat. “Blood is not loyalty. You taught me that by accident.”
The district attorney moved quickly after Charles’s statement. Conspiracy charges expanded. Old financial crimes reopened. Mercer Holdings announced an independent audit.
Samuel resigned as family counsel, admitting that his silence had helped powerful people hide too much for too long.
Before leaving, he handed Leo the certified replacement trust documents.
“Your mother wanted you protected from us,” he said.
“From who?”
Samuel looked tired.
“From adults who thought love gave them permission to decide your life.”
Leo turned eighteen two days later.
There was no party.
At breakfast, Julian gave him a small box.
Inside was Anna’s watch, repaired and ticking.
Leo’s eyes filled.
Then Marcus entered the room.
“We have a problem.”
Julian stood.
“What now?”
“The board received an emergency motion at 7:02 this morning.”
“From whom?”
May you like
Marcus handed him the filing.
Claire Bennett was suing Mercer Holdings for her share of Adrian’s trust.
