Chapter 8 - The Sewing Machine

The storage facility sat behind a row of auto shops forty minutes outside the city.
Marcus insisted Julian stay home.
Julian refused.
So did Leo.
By noon, the four of them were standing in front of Unit 214 while Rosa worked a trembling key into the padlock.
The door rolled up with a metallic scream.
Inside were twenty years of a life reduced to boxes.
Rosa went straight to a blue sewing machine case.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Empty.
“No,” she whispered.
Maya searched the drawers. Nothing.
Leo crouched beside the cabinet. “What is that?”
A fresh scratch ran along the wooden base.
Marcus turned it over.
The bottom panel had been pried open.
Someone had beaten them there.
Rosa sank onto a box. “I never told anyone.”
“Someone knew enough to search your things,” Marcus said.
A sound came from outside.
Tires.
Fast.
Marcus shoved everyone behind a concrete pillar as a black SUV tore through the lane.
The rear window lowered.
A hand appeared.
The first shot shattered the storage unit light.
Maya heard Leo curse.
Julian pulled his son down while Marcus drew his weapon and fired toward the tires.
The SUV swerved, clipped a yellow barrier, and sped away.
For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Rosa gave a shaky laugh because fear had nowhere else to go.
Maya crawled toward her. “Mom.”
Rosa grabbed her face. “I am sorry. I am so sorry.”
Marcus called the police.
Leo was staring at the broken sewing machine.
“Wait.”
He reached inside the case lining.
His fingers found a seam.
He tore it open.
A tiny memory card dropped into his palm.
Rosa stared.
“I forgot.”
“What?” Maya asked.
“Anna didn’t trust one copy.”
Back at the house, they loaded the memory card onto an offline laptop.
There was one audio file.
Dated three days before Anna’s death.
They pressed play.

Eleanor’s younger voice came through first.
“If the brakes fail on the hill, nobody will question it.”
