Chapter 18 - The Heir Nobody Expected

Claire looked horrified when Julian called her.

“I didn’t file anything.”

“Your name is on the petition.”

“I signed forms Miles sent me weeks ago. He said they were for access to adoption records.”

Maya felt anger rise behind her ribs.

Even from a motel under guard, Miles was still moving pieces.

The filing demanded an immediate freeze on Mercer family voting shares until Adrian’s inheritance claim could be resolved.

If granted, Leo could not vote his trust at the board meeting.

The conspiracy had one last mechanism already in motion.

Julian’s attorneys raced to court.

Claire flew in and testified that her signature had been obtained under false pretenses.

Then Leo did something nobody expected.

He asked to speak with her privately.

They met in a courthouse conference room.

Claire sat with her hands wrapped around a paper cup.

“I don’t want your money.”

“It might actually be your money.”

She looked up.

Leo continued. “Adrian was your grandfather. If his trust should have gone to Eleanor, then part of it belongs to her line. I’m not going to pretend otherwise just because she hurt me.”

Claire stared at him. “After everything she did?”

“What she did is hers. What was stolen is separate.”

Maya watched from the doorway and saw Anna in him—not because she had known Anna, but because she had seen what a person looked like when they refused to become the people who hurt them.

The judge denied the emergency freeze and ordered a full accounting instead.

At the board meeting three days later, Leo cast Anna’s twenty-eight percent voting block against Charles’s allies.

Julian retained control.

The audit committee was replaced.

For the first time in years, the company’s books opened completely.

That evening, Julian found Maya packing a suitcase in the staff apartment.

“What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

His face fell.

“Because of what happened?”

“Because I stayed too long in a house where I had to prove I deserved to be believed.”

May you like

Julian had no answer.

Then Maya added, “And because Leo offered me a job.”
