Chapter 15 - The Second Account

The custodial account was supposed to become Lily’s at twenty-five.

Thomas funded it quietly.

Birthday gifts.

Stock transfers.

One life-insurance distribution.

I did not know how large it had become.

The withdrawals began before Thomas died.

That changed everything.

Someone had been taking Lily’s money while he was still alive.

The account custodian was not me.

Thomas named her years earlier.

She had authority to make distributions only for Lily’s benefit.

The records listed:

Medical reimbursement.

But Lily’s school tuition was paid from our checking account.

Her medical bills were covered by insurance.

Her camps were paid by us.

Where did the money go?

$91,000 to Brooke’s businesses.

$64,000 to Carol.

$38,000 to Eric-controlled consulting entities.

The rest to fees and transfers.

Mark sat with both hands over his face.

“My mother stole from Lily before Dad died.”

Howard corrected him gently.

“We know she authorized distributions that appear inconsistent with the account purpose. Let investigators determine the legal conclusion.”

Then we found a note from Thomas.

He had questioned the account six weeks before his hospitalization.

Carol told him the statements were delayed.

He asked Eric for records.

Thomas created the lake locker shortly afterward.

He had been building his own backup because he no longer trusted the system around him.

The guilt hit Mark hard.

“I should have helped him.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I didn’t ask.”

He had begun to understand the difference.

Carol’s attorney contacted us.

She wanted to cooperate.

In exchange, she wanted us to support leniency.

I refused to promise anything.

“I’m not sentencing her.”

“You can submit a family statement.”

“I can tell the truth.”

Carol eventually admitted she approved the custodial withdrawals.

She claimed she believed Brooke would repay them.

She claimed Eric assured her the trust could be restored after the lake sale.

She claimed Thomas was too sick to understand.

Then investigators showed her Thomas’s video.

That ended that story.

One week later, most of the frozen funds were recovered from Eric-linked accounts.

Lily asked me:

“Did Aunt Brooke steal my birthday money?”

“No, honey.”

“Then what did she take?”

I thought carefully.

“Choices that belonged to you.”

Lily looked at me.

Then asked the hardest question yet.

“Will Grandma come to my next birthday?”
