Chapter 6 - Brooke Owed Thomas $312,000

Brooke’s debt explained the urgency.
Thomas had loaned her money over three years.
First for a boutique.
Then for a second location.
Then to cover taxes after both failed.
The final note was secured by Brooke’s share in the family company.
Thomas never called the loan early.
But he did not forgive it either.
After his death, the estate could collect.
The lake-property sale would do more than produce her share.
If she became successor trustee, she could influence timing, expenses, and distributions.
Mark stared at the loan schedule.
“She told me Dad forgave this.”
“He didn’t.”
“He told me she was doing better.”
“Maybe he hoped she would.”
The distinction hurt.
Then Howard found another document.
An amendment Thomas drafted but never executed.
It would have removed Brooke as alternate trustee entirely.
Why didn’t he sign it?
Because he entered the hospital two days later.
He died three weeks after that.
Carol had visited him every day.
Brooke almost every day.
I started to wonder who knew about the draft.
“Carol knew.”
His mother had been Thomas’s spouse.
She knew the estate better than anyone.
I asked:
“Did Thomas tell her why he wanted Brooke removed?”
“He was concerned about repeated requests for trust advances.”
“For Lily’s trust?”
“Not directly. For family assets around it.”
That afternoon, Mark received an email from his mother.
You are destroying this family over money.
He handed me the phone.
Lily’s money was missing.
Brooke owed the estate $312,000.
Someone forged my trustee approval.
Someone scheduled another $110,000 transfer.
And somehow we were destroying the family.
Mark typed:
Return Dad’s green box.
Carol replied:
Then another message.
We drove to Carol’s condo with a police officer who agreed to keep the peace while Mark asked for estate property.
Brooke’s car was outside.
“You brought police to Mom’s home?”
Mark held up Thomas’s inventory.
“Give me Dad’s box.”
“You’re insane.”
Then the officer noticed green paint on the floor behind her.
A small metal corner was visible beneath a blanket.
Brooke looked back.
Too late.
May you like
The green box was there.
But when Mark opened it, every document inside had been removed.
