Chapter 16 - What Lily Wanted

I did not answer for myself.

I asked Lily:

“What do you want?”

She twisted the sleeve of her sweatshirt.

“I don’t know.”

Kids should be allowed not to know.

She said she missed Grandma’s pancakes.

She did not miss Aunt Brooke.

She wanted to see Carol someday.

We told her that was allowed.

Boundaries did not have to be permanent to be real.

Carol entered a cooperation agreement months later.

She repaid what she could by selling her condo and other assets.

Brooke fought longer.

Then accepted a plea after Eric’s records and the original video destroyed most of her defenses.

The criminal case focused on financial conduct and falsified access.

The family case focused on us.

Mark sold his interest in one side venture tied to Brooke.

He stepped back from the family company.

Long enough to rebuild governance with outside oversight.

He also did something harder.

He stopped asking me to communicate with his mother for him.

If Carol called him, he answered.

If he was angry, he told her.

If she cried, he did not hand me the phone.

The independent fiduciary finished the trust audit.

Recovery from frozen accounts, insurance, and restitution restored most of Lily’s money.

Enough that her future was safe.

The lake house remained in the trust.

Lily asked if we could go there.

The first weekend, she stood on the dock in Thomas’s old sweatshirt.

Mark taught her to cast.

I watched from the steps.

Not careful laughter.

For months, I had been waiting for the story to feel finished.

Maybe families do not finish.

They repeat better patterns.

That night, Mark found an envelope tucked behind a loose board inside the boathouse.

Thomas’s handwriting again.

FOR LILY — WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH TO ASK WHY.

We placed it in the trust safe.

Then I noticed something written on the back.

Rachel will know when.

I smiled.

Even dead, Thomas was still giving me responsibility.

May you like

But this time, it did not feel like a burden.

It felt like trust.
