Chapter 14 - The Missing PhoneThe bridal suite had been locked.

Only four people had access.

Me.

Lena.

The coordinator.

Venue security.

And apparently anyone with a copied master key.

Security footage showed a catering employee entering at 7:14 p.m.

He removed the phone from the drawer.

Then exited through the service hall.

Maya identified him within minutes.

Not a catering employee.

A temporary worker hired that morning under a false name.

Vanessa’s lawyer immediately said:

“My client had nothing to do with that.”

Maybe.

We did not assume.

The worker was stopped in the parking lot before leaving.

He had the phone.

He also had three thousand dollars cash.

And a message thread.

Sender saved as V.

V: Phone is in lower drawer.

Worker: Got it.

V: Delete folder first. Then destroy device.

The attorney’s face tightened.

Vanessa looked at the messages.

“That’s not my number.”

It wasn’t.

The number belonged to a prepaid phone.

Maya asked the worker who hired him.

He pointed at Martin.

That complicated everything.

Martin’s attorney denied it.

The worker insisted.

Then investigators checked parking-lot footage.

At 8:05 that morning, the worker met someone beside Martin’s car.

But the person handing over the cash was not Martin.

It was Vanessa.

Her attorney stopped speaking.

I watched from across the room.

Vanessa finally looked tired.

Maya asked:

“Why did you need Claire’s evidence phone?”

Vanessa answered through counsel:

“No statement.”

The phone was returned to me after forensic imaging.

My folder remained intact.

The attempted deletion had failed because Andrew had set the account to remote-lock after my first call.

Then investigators found something unexpected.

The phone contained a recording I had forgotten.

Eight months earlier.

The night I first confronted Vanessa.

I had accidentally left the recorder running after she walked out.

Thirty seconds later, Martin entered.

Their conversation was faint but clear.

Martin said:

“She knows enough.”

Vanessa answered:

“Then make it look like she knows because she’s involved.”

Martin asked:

“And if she keeps digging?”

Vanessa’s response:

“Daniel will stop her.”

I looked at my husband.

He heard it too.

Daniel said quietly:

“She thought I’d choose peace over you.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“She thought you’d choose peace over truth.”

That was worse.

Then Martin’s attorney called Andrew.

Martin wanted to amend his statement.

According to him, Vanessa was not the top of the scheme.

There was someone above both of them.
