Chapter 18 - The Ruined DressVanessa laid the gown across the conference table.

The adhesive had hardened.
The silk was permanently damaged.
She touched the bodice.
“I hated this dress.”
“I noticed.”
She almost smiled.
Then she looked at me.
“I hated what it meant.”
“What?”
“That everyone would look at you.”
I stared.
“Vanessa, it was my wedding.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
“I know how stupid that sounds.”
For once, she did not defend it.
She told me Gregory had spent years comparing us.
Claire is creative.
Vanessa is practical.
Claire has Mom’s instincts.
Vanessa has ambition.
Every compliment came with a loser.
After Mom died, Gregory promised Vanessa permanent control of the company if she helped “stabilize” it.
That became hiding payments.
Then approving vendors.
Then North Bridge.
Then forgery.
Each step needed the next lie.
“Why frame me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because if the audit came out, Gregory said one of us had to take the fall.”
“And you picked me.”
“Yes.”
No tears changed that.
No childhood explanation erased it.
I asked:
“Why the dress?”
She swallowed.
“Because Martin said you planned to meet investigators after the wedding.”
True.
“So I thought if I ruined the ceremony…”
“I’d fall apart.”
She nodded.
“And Daniel?”
“I thought he’d get angry that you hid the investigation.”
“You tried that too.”
“Yes.”
At least she was honest now.
Andrew asked:
“Where is the original vendor ledger?”
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
“I have it.”
My pulse jumped.
“Where?”
“In the dress.”
I stared.
She turned the gown over.
Inside the reinforced hem was a long slit.
Hidden beneath the lining was a flat waterproof envelope.
Vanessa pulled it out.
Ledger copies.
Signed approvals.
Gregory’s handwritten notes.
Andrew stood.
“Why hide it here?”
“Because after I ruined the dress, everyone assumed it was trash.”
She looked at me.
“I planned to take it when I left.”
“But you didn’t.”
“No.”
“Why bring it now?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because Gregory told his lawyer I acted alone.”
There it was.
Not redemption.
Betrayal.
Again.
But the evidence was real.
Andrew photographed the envelope.
Then Vanessa said:
“There’s one more thing inside.”
A small folded note.
May you like
My mother’s handwriting.
Addressed to both of us.
