Chapter 10 - Forty-Seven MinutesVanessa could not have executed the transfer herself.

That mattered.

At 3:08 p.m., our mother died.

At 3:55 p.m., the payment moved.

Vanessa was sitting beside me in a hospital chapel at 3:55.

I remembered because I had cried into her coat.

So who sent it?

Martin.

The banking log answered.

His credentials.

His device.

His office IP address.

Andrew said:

“This is the first direct transaction we can tie to him.”

Daniel asked:

“And Vanessa?”

“North Bridge received the money. That ties her to the benefit, not necessarily the initiation.”

I hated how legal truth refused to satisfy emotional truth.

I wanted one sentence.

She did it.

Reality came in columns.

Dates.

Access logs.

Accounts.

Maya returned with news.

Martin’s attorney had arrived.

He wanted to cooperate.

Fast.

That meant fear.

Within an hour, Martin gave investigators access to a cloud folder.

Inside were years of messages between him and Vanessa.

One read:

V: How much can we move without triggering a board review?

M: Depends on quarter.

V: Claire never reads finance packets.

M: Neither do half the directors.

My face burned.

She was right.

I had trusted summaries.

Trusted Martin.

Trusted Vanessa.

Another message:

V: Mom is asking about North Bridge.

M: Delay.

V: She won’t stop.

M: Then give her something else to focus on.

Then:

V: Claire’s engagement announcement is next month.

M: Use it.

My engagement.

The leaked photos.

It had been a distraction.

My sister turned my happiest moments into cover.

Then Maya found a voice note.

Vanessa’s voice:

“Mom’s audit can’t reach the board before the wedding.”

Martin answered:

“It won’t if you get the signature.”

“What signature?” I asked.

Andrew searched the files.

A PDF appeared.

BOARD CONSENT — ASSET RESTRUCTURING.

The document would authorize sale of Collins Design’s flagship building to North Bridge Consulting.

For less than half market value.

The signing date field:

TODAY.

I looked at Andrew.

“That’s why she needed me distracted.”

Daniel said:

“Or cancelled.”

Because if the ceremony collapsed, I would have been upstairs crying while Vanessa found a way to put that document in front of me.

My reception was starting.

And somewhere in the building, Vanessa was still looking for a signature.
