Chapter 20 - Air

One year after the night Tove threw Mireya's inhaler across the room, the old office reopened with a new sign on the door.
MARISOL HART BREATHING ROOM.
The program funded rescue inhalers, asthma education, and emergency plans for children whose families struggled to pay for care.
Mireya insisted on cutting the ribbon herself.
Cullen stood behind her with Mara, Nora, Vale, and Luis.
After the ceremony, Mireya wandered to the garden with Cullen.
She carried her inhaler in a bright yellow case clipped to her backpack.
Not hidden.
Not embarrassing.
Ready.
"Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you still think about that night?"
Cullen knew which night she meant.
The party.
The lighthouse.
The crash.
All of them.
"Sometimes."
"Me too."
He waited.
Mireya kicked at the grass.
"But I don't think about Tove first anymore."
Cullen looked at her.
"What do you think about first?"
She smiled.
"You crawling under the table to get my inhaler."
His throat tightened.
"That wasn't exactly heroic."
"It was to me."
Cullen crouched so they were eye level.
"I should have protected you sooner."
Mireya shook her head.
"Mommy said grown-ups can be fooled. She said love doesn't disappear."
He smiled.
"Your mother was annoyingly wise."
"And bossy."
"Extremely bossy."
Mireya laughed.
The sound moved through the garden, light and ordinary.
That was the part Cullen treasured most.
Ordinary.
Not evidence.
Not testimony.
Not survival.
Just a child laughing on a bright afternoon.
Mireya reached for his hand.
"Come on. Aunt Mara saved us cake."
They started toward the house.
Halfway there, Mireya stopped to take one calm breath, then another.
No fear.
No one watching to decide whether she deserved the air.
Cullen squeezed her hand.
For eighteen months, he had believed the truth would save them.
In the end, the truth had done something harder.
May you like
It had given them the chance to save themselves.
And this time, they walked home together.
