Chapter 3 - The Locked Drawer

Cullen sent Tove away with Mara standing between them.
Tove did not argue this time.
That made him more afraid.
Before leaving, she pointed at Mireya.
"You are making a terrible mistake."
Cullen stepped forward. "Do not speak to my daughter again."
The front door closed.
Mireya started crying.
Not loudly. Quietly. Like she had practiced doing it without being heard.
Cullen carried her upstairs, checked her breathing, and sat beside her until the tremors stopped.
"The key," he said gently. "Do you know what it opens?"
"Mommy's desk. The drawer you couldn't open."
Cullen's stomach turned.
Marisol's office had remained almost untouched since her death. He had tried the bottom desk drawer once. It was locked, and grief had made him walk away rather than force it.
The brass key turned with a soft click.
Inside were three things.
A sealed envelope with Cullen's name.
A small digital recorder.
And a file folder marked HARBOR HOUSE FOUNDATION - INTERNAL.
Cullen opened the envelope first.
His wife's handwriting hit him harder than any fist.
Cullen,
If you are reading this, I did not get the chance to explain. Please don't trust anyone who tells you I was unstable. I found money missing from the foundation. Tove knows I found it. So does Bryce.
Cullen stopped.
Bryce Keene was Tove's older brother.
He was also the chief financial officer of Marisol's charity foundation.
Cullen read the next line twice.
I am meeting with Detective Vale tomorrow morning. If I do not make that meeting, give him the recorder. Keep Mireya close.
Cullen's hand shook.
Marisol had died at 11:42 p.m.
Detective Adrian Vale had handled the crash investigation.
Cullen grabbed his phone and searched the old case contacts.
Vale's number was still there.
He called.
A tired voice answered on the fourth ring.
"Vale."
"This is Cullen Hart. I found something Marisol left for you."
Silence.
Then Vale said, very quietly, "Do not play that recorder in your house."
Cullen looked toward the hallway.
"Why?"
May you like
"Because if Tove knows you found it, you're already in danger."
A floorboard creaked behind him.
