Chapter 11 - The False Aunt

The E.C. account belonged to Evelyn.

The device did not.

IT logs showed the approval came from a tablet connected through the guest Wi-Fi.

Device name:

ELENA-COLE-IPAD.

“There is no Elena Cole.”

Naomi looked at the name again.

E.C.

A manufactured identity.

Someone created a fake device label to resemble Evelyn’s initials and Elena Alvarez’s first name.

Two innocent women blended into one convenient suspect.

Sloppy enough to discover later.

Clean enough to confuse people early.

The tablet itself had been wiped.

But network logs stored its hardware address.

Marcus found the purchase record.

Patricia Sterling bought the tablet with a corporate card.

“There’s our bridge.”

By afternoon, the Foundation board froze all suspicious vendors.

Elena Alvarez was formally cleared.

She cried in the laundry room where nobody could see.

Naomi found her anyway.

“I almost quit,” Elena admitted.

“Why didn’t you?”

“I wanted my name back.”

At five, Vanessa’s attorney contacted Adrian.

Vanessa wanted to retrieve personal belongings.

Naomi insisted on supervised access.

Vanessa arrived in sunglasses despite the rain.

“Enjoying this?”

“No.”

“Liar.”

Vanessa walked to the bedroom suite.

Then stopped beside a framed engagement picture.

“You think you won because you caught my foot?”

Naomi answered:

“No.”

Vanessa looked at her reflection.

“You have no idea how these families work.”

“I know how pressure works.”

“You think Adrian is good?”

“I think he has choices.”

“So did Thomas.”

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Naomi did not chase the sentence.

As Vanessa left, Caleb arrived with another memory.

“The man in the recording.”

“Daniel Reece?”

“No. Before Daniel.”

He described seeing Vanessa with a different man near the Foundation garage.

Tall. Gray suit. Distinctive limp.

Evelyn recognized the description.

“Graham Pike.”

The Foundation’s former chief financial officer.

He had resigned ten months earlier after Thomas challenged unexplained vendor payments.

Everyone believed he moved to Arizona.

His credit card had been used in the city that morning.

Then Rachel found a company registration.

Brighton Advisory’s original organizer:

Graham Pike.

Vanessa had not created the scheme.

May you like

She had joined it.

And Graham Pike was still nearby.
