Chapter 9 - Thomas Cole’s Letter

The missing letter became the center of everything.

Vanessa had spent hours alone in Thomas Cole’s office after the funeral.

She said she was organizing condolences.

Nobody questioned it.

Why would they?

She was grieving beside Adrian.

Naomi searched the estate archive.

Claire searched old scanned mail.

Then Elena remembered Thomas had hated keeping single copies.

“He didn’t trust computers.”

“He didn’t trust people either.”

Thomas mailed duplicates of important letters to his attorney.

One sealed envelope had arrived three days before his death.

Never opened because Thomas died before giving authorization.

Inside was the missing letter.

Naomi told him to take his time.

Thomas had noticed Vanessa asking about spousal board rights before Adrian proposed.

He discovered Sterling Event Logistics billing the Foundation for services never delivered.

He confronted Patricia Sterling.

She called it a bookkeeping error.

Then the payments shifted to Brighton Advisory.

Thomas wrote:

When a river changes names, follow the water.

Claire laughed through tears.

“That sounds like Dad.”

The letter also mentioned Daniel Reece.

Thomas believed someone in Adrian’s personal circle was giving Reece negotiation data.

He did not yet know who.

Then the last paragraph:

If it is Vanessa, do not protect yourself by pretending you were foolish to love her. Love is not stupidity. Refusing evidence because it hurts is.

Adrian stopped reading.

Private grief deserved room.

Then Rachel reached the final page.

Bank transfer authorization.

$180,000 from the Cole Foundation to Brighton Advisory.

Approved electronically by Elena Alvarez.

But Thomas had handwritten:

ELENA WAS WITH ME IN BOSTON THIS DAY.

The approval was impossible.

Proof the fraud had started earlier than anyone thought.

Then Claire noticed a number in Thomas’s margin.

Naomi and Marcus drove there with Rachel and police counsel.

Inside were archived event boxes.

And one locked metal case.

The case held photographs of Vanessa meeting Daniel Reece.

Thomas’s voice:

“Vanessa, I know about Brighton.”

Vanessa answered:

“You know enough to become inconvenient.”

Adrian, listening remotely, went silent.

Thomas:

“Are you threatening me?”

“No, Thomas. I’m warning you.”

Then another voice entered.

“Stop talking in the hallway.”

Naomi looked at Rachel.

Not proof of violence.

Not proof Thomas’s death was anything but the documented heart attack it had been.

But proof he had confronted them.

Then police found one more item in the case.

May you like

Vanessa’s engagement ring appraisal.

Dated four months before Adrian proposed.
