Chapter 14 - Thomas Knew Her

Naomi recognized the handwriting.

Not the name.

The memory came later.

Eight years earlier, Naomi had worked a corporate protection assignment in Chicago.

A hotel evacuation.

One older man refused to leave a conference room because his assistant had collapsed.

Naomi went back for both.

The man was Thomas Cole.

She had not known who he was.

She barely remembered his face.

Thomas remembered hers.

He later asked Evelyn for Naomi’s agency information.

“Why didn’t he contact me?” Naomi asked.

“He did,” Evelyn said.

“You declined.”

Then remembered an email from a wealthy family office offering private work.

She had been burned out.

After Thomas died and the leaks worsened, Evelyn found the old note.

IF I’M GONE, CALL HER.

Naomi looked at Adrian.

“Your father hired me from the grave.”

“Apparently.”

For the first time in days, they both laughed.

The legal consequences unfolded over months.

Patricia faced charges tied to fraud, unauthorized access, intimidation, and evidence manipulation.

Graham Pike entered a cooperation agreement and admitted his role in the vendor scheme.

Vanessa was charged separately for financial conspiracy, unauthorized system access, falsifying business records, and the ballroom assault.

Daniel Reece denied knowing the data was stolen, but civil litigation and regulatory scrutiny followed his company.

The Cole Foundation recovered much of the missing money through frozen accounts and settlements.

Real life rarely returned every dollar neatly.

Vanessa eventually requested a private meeting with Adrian.

Not for reconciliation.

Afterward Adrian found her in the garden.

“She said she loved me.”

“Maybe she did.”

“You believe that?”

“People can love someone and still use them.”

“That’s depressing.”

“It’s useful.”

“She said she started stealing before she expected to marry me.”

“Then when I proposed, she thought she could fix everything once she had more control.”

“Did she believe that?”

“I think so.”

Greed rarely introduced itself as greed.

Sometimes it called itself a solution.

Months later, Vanessa entered a plea on several counts while contesting others.

She lost the engagement.

Her carefully built image.

But Naomi did not celebrate any of that.

The part that mattered came at the Foundation’s next donor dinner.

Elena Alvarez stood at the front of the ballroom.

Her name had been cleared publicly.

Claire returned to the audit committee.

Caleb attended as a guest.

Naomi stood near the back.

Then Adrian raised a glass.

“To the people we ignored because we thought status told us who mattered.”

Naomi almost rolled her eyes.

Then he added:

“And to the people who told the truth anyway.”

Across the room, Elena lifted her glass.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“You staying?”

Naomi looked toward the ballroom door.

“I haven’t decided.”

May you like

Evelyn smiled.

“You always decide near exits.”
