Chapter 11 - The Other Box

The brass key fit a safe-deposit box at First National Bank.
Daniel had rented it under Ethan's name with Mara as co-authorized custodian.
Inside were no stacks of cash.
There was one flash drive, one notarized letter, and a sealed envelope addressed to Lily.
Mara read the letter first.
Daniel explained that he had discovered Amanda and Raymond siphoning funds nine months before his death.
He had confronted Amanda privately.
She claimed Raymond manipulated her after threatening to expose debts from before their marriage.
Daniel agreed not to report her immediately if she helped recover the money and testified against Raymond.
Instead, she warned Raymond.
"He knew," Ethan whispered.
Mara nodded.
The flash drive contained backups of company logs, trust records, and security footage from Daniel's home office.
One video showed Raymond using Daniel's laptop while Amanda stood beside him.
Another showed Amanda practicing Daniel's signature.
Then came a clip recorded five days before the crash.
Daniel sat alone at his desk.
"I don't know what Amanda will choose," he said into the camera. "But I know what Lily has already chosen."
He smiled sadly.
"She keeps sneaking food to Ethan when Amanda punishes him. She's six years old and somehow understands loyalty better than most adults I know."
Lily covered her mouth.
Daniel continued.
"Lily is not my biological daughter. That has never made her less mine. If anything happens to Amanda, I want Denise to care for Lily, and I want Ethan's trust to pay for her education through a separate gift account I've already created."
Mara opened the envelope addressed to Lily.
Inside was a simple note.
YOU NEVER HAVE TO EARN YOUR PLACE IN THIS FAMILY.
Lily cried silently.
Then Detective Cole's phone rang.
Raymond's truck had been found again.

This time, there was a body in the driver's seat.
But it wasn't Raymond.
