Chapter 19 - For Ethan and Lily

They played Daniel's last message together.
Ethan, Lily, Mara, and Denise sat around the same kitchen table where Lily had pushed a waffle onto Ethan's plate weeks earlier.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
"If both of you are hearing this, then something went badly enough that adults had to explain things I hoped you'd never need to know."
Lily started crying before he reached the next sentence.
"Ethan, you were my first lesson in being a father. Lily, you were my second. Neither lesson had anything to do with blood."
Ethan looked at Lily.
She reached for his hand.
Daniel continued.
"People will tell you family is biology, paperwork, money, last names, and legal rights. Those things matter sometimes. But when life gets ugly, family becomes much simpler. Family is the person who brings you food when someone else says you don't deserve it. Family is the person who believes you before the room does. Family is the person who stays."
Mara wiped her eyes.
"I created two education accounts," Daniel said. "One for each of you. Ethan's trust stays Ethan's because it came from Claire's family. Lily's account is mine to give, and I give it gladly. No competition. No measuring. No child has to lose for another child to be loved."
The recording ended with Daniel laughing softly.
"And Lily, stop stealing chicken off my plate. I know it's you."
Lily laughed through tears.
That night, Ethan placed the black recorder in a small wooden box.
He didn't need to carry it anymore.
But before closing the lid, he pressed one button.
The red light came on.
He looked at Lily.
"Want to make our own file?"
She nodded.
Ethan leaned toward the microphone.
"This is Ethan Reed."
Lily leaned in beside him.
"And Lily Vale."
Then she corrected herself.
"No. Just Lily."
May you like
Ethan smiled.
"My sister."
