Chapter 5 - The Man in the Messages

Mara took a photograph of the message before Lily's stolen phone locked.

"Who is R.V.?" Ethan asked.

Lily shook her head.

Mara didn't answer right away.

She drove them to a small guest apartment above her law office, gave them hot chocolate, and called the police non-emergency line.

"I'm not sending you back tonight," she said. "Not until we know what we're dealing with."

Ethan sat at the kitchen table with the recorder in front of him.

"Can we listen to everything?"

Mara nodded.

The first files were ordinary. Daniel talking about work. Daniel reminding Ethan how to reset the device. Daniel laughing because Ethan had recorded the dog barking.

Then they reached a file dated four days before the crash.

Daniel's voice sounded tired.

"Amanda thinks the trust is unfair. She says Lily should receive the same amount. I told her I already provided for Lily separately because I love her, but Ethan's trust came from his mother and grandfather. It isn't mine to rewrite."

Ethan looked up.

His mother, Claire, had died when he was three.

Daniel continued.

"Tonight I found a draft petition asking the court to declare me mentally impaired and transfer temporary control of Ethan's trust to Amanda. My signature on the supporting affidavit is fake."

Mara stopped the recording.

"That's why he called me."

"Did you tell the police?"

"After the crash, yes. But the draft was gone from his office, and the financial trail suddenly stopped."

Lily hugged her knees.

"Play more."

The next file contained two voices.

Daniel.

And a man.

"If you expose this," the man said, "Amanda goes down with me."

Daniel replied, "Then maybe she should."

Mara's face went white.

Ethan whispered, "You know him."

She nodded.

"Raymond Vale. Amanda's brother."

Lily stared at her.

"Uncle Ray?"

Mara reached for her phone.

Before she could dial, headlights swept across the office windows.

A black pickup stopped outside.
