Chapter 12 - The Server

Caleb Ruiz became a witness by accident.
That made him valuable.
He had no family loyalty.
No financial interest.
No history with Vanessa.
He simply saw what happened.
Vanessa’s lawyer tried to make him nervous.
“You’re nineteen?”
“Yes.”
“You were carrying alcohol?”
“Yes.”
“You were working?”
“Yes.”
“So your attention was divided.”
Caleb smiled.
“I still saw her kick.”
Naomi almost laughed.
Then he added:
“And I heard her say, ‘Get the fall.’”
The room changed.
Vanessa’s attorney stopped writing.
“Who did she say that to?”
“The photographer.”
Caleb’s statement matched the messages.
Clean.
Simple.
Hard to spin.
Then Marcus Hale cooperated fully.
He gave investigators access logs.
Vanessa had entered security rooms repeatedly.
Downloaded footage.
Deleted clips.
Used his credentials.
Marcus accepted money.
He would face consequences.
He did not ask for sympathy.
“I thought it was privacy work.”
Naomi asked:
“When did you know it wasn’t?”
He looked ashamed.
“Before the gala.”
“Why keep going?”
“Because admitting it meant admitting the first money mattered.”
Naomi understood.
Compromise grew by repetition.
Then Marcus revealed one more detail.
Vanessa once asked him to export footage of Elena Alvarez.
The bookkeeper.
Walking into the archive room.
Vanessa wanted timestamps showing Elena alone near records.
Framing groundwork.
Again.
Rachel assembled the pattern.
Naomi: theft accusation.
Elena: falsified approvals.
Claire: rehab leverage.
Evelyn: lake house misuse.
Adrian: blind loyalty.
Marcus: paid access.
Everyone had a pressure point.
Vanessa found it.
Then Adrian asked:
“What was mine?”
Naomi answered before anyone else.
“Her.”
He looked at her.
Vanessa herself was Adrian’s pressure point.
He had protected her because admitting doubt felt like admitting he had chosen wrong.
He sat with that.
Then the board investigator entered.
“We found the missing $640,000.”
Adrian stood.
“Where?”
The investigator placed one page on the table.
“In a property purchase.”
Naomi read the address.
A townhouse in Brooklyn.
Owner of record:
Naomi Bennett.
May you like
She went cold.
Someone had just framed her with the money.
