Chapter 16 - Reece’s Server

Reece kept everything.
That was arrogance.
Emails.
Audio.
Spreadsheets.
Photos.
Lists of corporate sources.
Vanessa was one of twelve.
Not special.
Not protected.
Replaceable.
The server showed similar schemes in three companies.
Insiders paid for access.
Charity vendors used to move funds.
Personal secrets collected as leverage.
Graham Pike handled accounting.
Reece handled pressure.
Vanessa handled Cole.
Adrian saw his life reduced to a client folder.
COLE / ACCESS / V.S.
He closed the screen.
“No more.”
Rachel agreed.
Enough evidence existed.
Then investigators found a file on Claire.
Her rehab.
Medical rumors.
Photos outside Ashford House.
Reece planned to leak them if Adrian resisted the merger pressure.
Claire saw the file.
Went pale.
Naomi sat beside her.
“You don’t have to read it.”
Claire closed the laptop.
“Good.”
That was strength too.
Not consuming every detail.
Evelyn decided the foundation would publicly acknowledge the failures.
No euphemisms.
No “accounting irregularities.”
Fraud.
Manipulation.
Failures of oversight.
The board created new controls.
Dual approvals.
Independent audits.
No family member controlling vendor selection.
Staff reporting channels.
Elena Alvarez was reinstated and publicly cleared.
Marcus resigned.
Caleb received a scholarship from the foundation.
He tried to refuse.
Evelyn said:
“It’s not payment for testimony.”
“Then why?”
“Because you were already in the applicant pool.”
He stared.
“You checked?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
He accepted.
Naomi watched the family learn to do things without turning gratitude into ownership.
Slowly.
Then Adrian offered Naomi a permanent executive protection role.
She laughed.
“No.”
“More money.”
“No.”
“Better hours.”
“Impossible.”
He smiled.
“What do you want?”
She thought.
“My own company.”
He almost offered investment.
Stopped.
Good.
Naomi noticed.
“Learning.”
“Painfully.”
She started Bennett Protective Consulting six months later.
Her first contract was not Cole.
On purpose.
Then one afternoon, a letter arrived.
From Vanessa.
Naomi did not open it.
She placed it in a drawer.
Some stories did not need one more scene.
But Adrian’s did.
May you like
Because the criminal case was heading to sentencing.
And he had been asked to speak.
