Chapter 18 - The Ballroom Again

One year later, the Cole Foundation held another gala.

Same ballroom.

Different rules.

All cameras working.

Independent security.

Vendor disclosures.

Staff hotline posted backstage.

Naomi attended as a guest.

Not employee.

She wore a black suit.

No apron.

Caleb worked the event as a hospitality management intern.

He grinned when he saw her.

“Try not to catch anyone’s ankle.”

“No promises.”

Adrian approached.

“Dance?”

Naomi looked at him.

“No.”

He laughed.

“Worth asking.”

Their relationship had settled somewhere honest.

Respect.

Affection.

Possibility.

No rescue romance.

No reward for surviving scandal.

Just two adults who knew each other better than before.

Evelyn gave a short speech.

No mention of Vanessa.

Good.

The foundation was not going to make its future depend on repeating her name.

Then Elena Alvarez was introduced as the new compliance director.

Standing ovation.

She cried.

Caleb cried.

He denied it.

The night stayed ordinary.

Then a woman near the entrance stumbled.

A heel caught in the carpet.

Naomi moved automatically.

Caught her elbow.

The woman laughed.

“Thank you.”

Naomi smiled.

“No problem.”

For half a second, the ballroom returned.

Vanessa’s ankle.

The silence.

The accusation.

Then it passed.

Adrian noticed.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

She meant it.

Then he said:

“Those weren’t the only cameras in the room.”

Naomi looked at him.

“Terrible joke.”

“I know.”

She laughed anyway.

Later that night, Evelyn handed Naomi an envelope.

Not money.

A photograph.

The moment after the kick.

Not Naomi holding Vanessa.

The next second.

Caleb stepping forward.

Adrian looking up.

Evelyn watching.

A room full of people deciding what to do with the truth.

On the back Evelyn had written:

ONE PERSON INTERRUPTS THE STORY. OTHERS HAVE TO CHOOSE WHETHER TO LISTEN.

May you like

Naomi kept that.

Not the letter from Vanessa.
