Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

The slap cracked across the ballroom before the orchestra finished the last note.

Seven-year-old Grace Vega hit the floor beside the head table, one hand pressed to her cheek. A plate spun once on the white marble and shattered. Sauce splashed across the front of her pale-blue dress.

Nobody moved.

Celeste Whitmore stood over her in a silk wedding gown and snapped, “Filthy brat! Look what you did.”

Grace had bumped the edge of Celeste’s plate while trying to squeeze past a chair. Emiliano Vega rose slowly from his seat.

Grace scrambled up and ran straight into his arms. “Daddy…”

He knelt and touched the red mark on her face. “Did she hit you?”

Grace nodded, then whispered, “She said I wasn’t supposed to be in the family pictures either.”

Emiliano looked up.

Celeste’s anger vanished. “What pictures?”

Grace pointed toward the photographer’s station.

“Bring him here,” Emiliano told Mateo, his security chief.

The photographer arrived pale. “Mr. Vega, I was given written instructions. I thought they came from the bride.”

He handed Emiliano a printed sheet.

PHOTOGRAPH EMILIANO WITH CELESTE’S FAMILY.

DO NOT INCLUDE GRACE IN OFFICIAL PORTRAITS.

GRACE MUST NOT APPEAR BESIDE HER FATHER.

Celeste’s signature sat at the bottom.

Emiliano read it twice.

Then the photographer opened his camera and showed several staged shots taken before the ceremony. Celeste’s thirteen-year-old daughter, Ava, stood beside Emiliano’s empty chair—exactly where Grace always stood.

“You weren’t angry because she touched your plate,” Emiliano said.

Celeste backed away. “Emiliano, listen to me.”

“You wanted her crying. You wanted her gone before the portraits.”

He lifted Grace and placed her in his chair.

“You wanted a picture showing my daughter had no place beside me.” His voice dropped. “Instead, everyone here just saw exactly who tried to take it.”

Celeste went white.

Then Grace buried her face against his shoulder and whispered one more thing.

“She said Mommy got in the way too.”
