Chapter 6 - THE PETITION

That night, Emiliano nearly broke a chair.

Victor arrived with a folder thick enough to bend at the spine.

“The petition was never filed,” he said. “But it was prepared. It cites aggression, separation anxiety, dangerous fixation on her deceased mother, and repeated hostility toward Ava.”

“All lies,” Emiliano said.

“Not all invented from nothing. Someone collected real events and changed the meaning.”

Victor read examples.

Grace cried at school on Isabella’s birthday became prolonged emotional instability.

Grace argued with a classmate became violent outburst.

Grace refused to sleep at Celeste’s apartment became unhealthy attachment to her father.

Celeste sat rigid across the room.

“You were building a case against my child,” Emiliano said.

“I was protecting this family.”

“From a seven-year-old?”

“From what would happen if you died.”

Silence.

Victor’s eyes narrowed. “Explain that.”

Celeste looked at Grace, then away. “Her trust controls forty-one percent of Vega Holdings when she turns eighteen. If Emiliano dies before then, the trustee controls voting rights, but the guardian controls access, education, medical decisions, residence—everything around her.”

Emiliano felt nauseated.

“You wanted control of Grace.”

“I wanted stability.”

“You slapped her onto a floor.”

Celeste’s face cracked for a second. “That wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Grace spoke quietly. “What was supposed to happen?”

Nobody answered.

Detective Cross opened the folder. “Who is Dr. Harlan?”

Celeste’s lawyer objected, but Cross ignored him.

Victor slid over another page.

“Child psychiatrist. He signed a preliminary recommendation stating Grace might need residential treatment after a ‘family transition.’”

Emiliano stared at the signature.

“Where?”

Victor hesitated.

“Connecticut. Private facility.”

Grace’s face drained.

“You were going to send me away?”

Celeste whispered, “Only if you needed help.”

Grace climbed off her chair and moved behind Emiliano.

Then Detective Cross’s phone rang.

She listened for ten seconds.

Her expression changed.

“Dr. Harlan’s office was broken into tonight.”

Emiliano stood.

Cross continued.

“His computer is gone, his files are burned, and Dr. Harlan is missing.”
