Chapter 16 - EXHIBIT A

Dr. Harlan was found alive before noon.
He had been locked in a bedroom at the lodge with food, water, and no phone. Once police showed him Adrian’s arrest, he started talking.
Every lie had a price.
The fake evaluations, staged incidents, and residential-treatment recommendation.
The plan to file immediately after Emiliano and Celeste returned from their honeymoon.
Victor spread the documents across the table.
“This is what they intended,” he said. “First, remove Grace physically. Second, establish Celeste as guardian. Third, pressure the trustees to approve a restructuring of the family voting rights.”
“And the portraits?” Emiliano asked.
Victor tapped the instruction sheet.
“Optics. Judges are human. Boards are human. Donors are human. Show the world the same image long enough and people start believing it.”
Grace sat across from him.
“Was I really going to disappear?”
Emiliano pushed the papers away.
“No.”
“But they tried.”
“Yes.”
She looked down at her hands. “And you almost married her.”
That hurt because it was true.
“I did.”
“Didn’t you see she didn’t like me?”
Emiliano took a long breath.
“I saw things I explained away. I told myself blending families was hard. I told myself you needed time. I told myself Celeste was stressed.”
Grace looked at him with the brutal clarity only children had.
“So you kept making excuses for the grown-up.”
“Yes.”
“And made me say sorry.”
“Yes.”
He leaned forward.
“I can’t undo that. But I can promise you something better than ‘I’m sorry.’ From now on, when you tell me something feels wrong, I will listen before I explain it away.”
Grace studied him.
“Even if I’m wrong?”
“Even then.”
Ava appeared in the doorway.
“My mom wants to see me.”
Celeste was being taken to county jail on charges that now included conspiracy, child endangerment, evidence tampering, and assault.
Ava’s chin trembled.
“I don’t know if I hate her.”
Grace stood and took her hand.
“You don’t have to know today.”
Ava nodded.
Then Mateo entered carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
“Daniel Park found something on his cloud backup.”
He placed a printed photograph on the table.

It showed Celeste and Malcolm at the wedding, ten minutes before Grace was slapped.
Malcolm was handing Celeste a syringe.
