Chapter 1 - The Word That Stopped the Room

“Daddy.”

The word was barely louder than a breath, but Nathan Cole felt it like a gunshot.

Four-year-old Lily stood beside Grace on the kitchen floor, crying into the sleeve of a faded cardigan. Grace’s maid uniform was torn at one shoulder. A hockey stick lay on the tile between them.

Victoria, Nathan’s fiancée, looked from the child to Nathan and forced a laugh.

“She’s confused.”

Nathan did not look at her. “What did she call me?”

Grace swallowed. “Daddy.”

“Why?”

“Because you are.”

The kitchen went silent.

Nathan had closed deals worth hundreds of millions without showing fear. Now his hands would not stop shaking.

Lily pulled a folded photograph from her pocket. Nathan recognized the lakeside cabin instantly. He was twenty-seven in the picture, smiling beside Grace, three weeks before Grace vanished from his life.

“I kept everything,” Grace said.

Victoria stepped between them. “This is a setup. She’s been inside your house for months. She could teach that kid anything.”

Grace pointed at the hockey stick. “Then check the camera.”

Victoria froze.

Nathan saw it.

He reached for his phone.

The kitchen lights went black.

The security app flashed one message: SYSTEM OFFLINE.

Then his phone rang.

CHARLES WHITMORE.

Victoria’s father.

Nathan answered.

Charles did not say hello.

“Do not believe Grace Bennett’s story,” he said calmly.

Nathan stared through the darkness at Victoria.

Charles added, “Especially not about the child.”

Nathan’s voice turned cold. “How do you know there is a child?”

May you like

Silence.

Then Charles hung up.
