Chapter 19 - What They Could Not Get Back

Charles Whitmore was indicted on fraud, conspiracy, kidnapping, cybercrime, and charges tied to Nathan’s car crash.

Martin Cole resigned from every family position and entered a cooperation agreement in the financial investigation.

Peter’s evidence cleared the false birth record.

Lily’s legal paternity was corrected.

The newspapers called it a corporate scandal.

Nathan hated that phrase.

It made four stolen years sound like a stock-price problem.

He refused interviews.

Grace refused them too.

They focused on Lily.

Nathan took two days a week away from Cole Capital entirely.

The first month, he was terrible at it.

He checked email during breakfast.

Lily closed his laptop once and said, “No work face.”

Grace laughed so hard she had to leave the room.

Nathan never forgot the phrase.

He learned preschool pickup.

He learned that Lily hated peas and loved blueberries.

He learned she needed the hallway light on but did not want anyone to mention it.

Grace moved into her own apartment nearby.

Nathan offered to buy it.

She said no.

He accepted no.

That mattered.

One evening they sat on her balcony after Lily fell asleep.

Nathan said, “I keep wanting to apologize for four years I didn’t know existed.”

Grace looked at him.

“You can be sorry without making yourself guilty for what Charles did.”

“What about what my family did?”

“That part you live differently from.”

Nathan nodded.

“Us?” he asked carefully.

Grace was quiet for a long time.

“I don’t know.”

He felt disappointment, but not anger.

“Okay.”

She smiled faintly.

“That answer is one reason I might someday.”

Inside, Lily called sleepily, “Daddy?”

Nathan stood.

May you like

Grace watched him go.

For once, nobody was deciding his future for him.
