Chapter 16 - What My Mother Died For

That night, I finally listened to the rest of my mother’s old voicemails.

Most were ordinary.

Buy milk.

Call me when you get off work.

Your brother forgot his jacket again.

Then I found one recorded three days before she died.

“Clara, someday you’re going to think I kept things from you because I didn’t trust you. That isn’t true. I kept them because I wanted you to have a life that belonged to you.”

I cried so hard I had to sit on the floor.

Ricardo found me there.

He didn’t touch me.

He just sat against the opposite wall.

“My father taught me secrets were power,” he said. “Sofia taught me they were poison.”

I wiped my face. “You loved her?”

“More than I knew how to show.”

For once, he didn’t sound like a dangerous man. He sounded like a widower who had failed to understand his wife until after she was gone.

Torres called at midnight.

Digital forensics had repaired part of Sofia’s final video.

We gathered in the study.

Sofia appeared on screen.

“Marco is moving money, but Adrian is giving orders. If anything happens to me, it will look like Ricardo’s enemies did it.”

Ricardo closed his eyes.

Then Sofia added one more sentence.

“Victor is not the leak. He’s the only one who tried to warn me.”

Victor turned away.

The video ended with an address.

A storage facility in Red Hook.

And a date.

Ricardo never asked to hear my mother's voicemail again. He understood that some grief belongs to the person holding it. Instead, he made tea and left it outside the guest-room door. It was badly made and far too strong. Somehow that meant more than another apology. Men like him were comfortable buying solutions. Learning to offer something small without controlling the outcome seemed harder.

Tomorrow.
