Chapter 17 - The Storage Unit

Torres wanted to handle the storage unit alone.
Ricardo insisted on coming.
I insisted harder.
“My mother died for whatever is in there.”
Ricardo looked like he wanted to argue.
He didn’t.
Inside the unit were banker boxes, old ledgers, and one locked metal case.
No guns. No cash.
Paper.
The kind of paper that ruins powerful men.
My mother’s handwriting covered half the ledgers.
Sofia’s covered the rest.
Payments moved through charities, construction vendors, and fake consulting companies. Marco had taken his cut. Adrian had approved transfers. Several city contractors had looked the other way.
Torres photographed everything.
Then Ricardo opened the metal case.
Inside was Sofia’s wedding ring.
And a flash drive labeled FOR LEO.
We played it on a laptop.
Sofia smiled into the camera.
“Leo, if you’re old enough to understand this, then I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you myself.”
Ricardo’s face broke.
But halfway through, the lights went out.
A metal door slammed outside.
Someone had locked us inside the unit.
Then smoke began seeping under the door.
Ricardo grabbed the fire extinguisher.
Torres shouted into her radio.
I heard footsteps retreating.
And through the smoke, a familiar voice called from the other side.
“Tell Ricardo he should have let the past stay buried.”

The ledgers were ugly in their ordinariness. No secret codes. No dramatic signatures in red ink. Just invoices, dates, transfers, initials, and numbers lined up in columns. People imagine corruption as something cinematic. My mother had known better. Most betrayal fits comfortably inside spreadsheets, stamped forms, and polite emails that look harmless until someone compares the right two pages.
Adrian.
