Chapter 10 - The Trust That Changed Everything

Rebecca searched family trust archives.

Most records from 1989 were still paper.

Several boxes had never been digitized.

By evening, they found the agreement.

Mercer House had been placed into a special family trust by Julian’s grandmother.

If Charles Mercer fathered a child outside his marriage before inheriting control, that child retained an equal beneficial interest.

Julian stared.

“My grandmother wrote this?”

Rebecca nodded.

“She may have known about Elena.”

Charles whispered, “She suspected.”

“So Anna owns part of Mercer House.”

Mara laughed bitterly.

“Now I understand why your father wanted Elena gone.”

Charles closed his eyes.

Julian’s grandfather, Arthur Mercer, had been obsessed with keeping assets inside the recognized family line.

Anna’s existence threatened inheritance.

Not emotionally.

Financially.

Rebecca continued.

“What?”

“The trust automatically transferred to direct descendants after Margaret died.”

“So me.”

“And any other qualifying child of Charles.”

“Anna.”

“Yes.”

If alive, Anna had owned half the mansion for eight years.

Julian looked toward the walls.

He had spent millions restoring a house that may never have been entirely his.

He cared that someone had hidden a person to protect property.

Mara said, “If Anna knows, maybe that is why she sent the photograph.”

Charles looked at the letter.

“Bring the portrait.”

Julian frowned.

Rebecca said, “Or something is hidden in it.”

Custom oak.

No one breathed.

Julian opened it.

A birth certificate.

Anna Elena Santos.

Mother: Elena Santos.

Father: left blank.

And a handwritten note:

Charles,

You had thirty years to tell him.

Now Julian gets to decide what kind of Mercer he is.

May you like

Signed:

A.
