Chapter 14 - The Land Lucia Never Knew She Owned

Lucia Santos had been made owner of forty acres without knowing it.

At first, nobody understood why.

Then Rebecca found the tax history.

Arthur Mercer transferred contaminated industrial land into Lucia’s name through a shell company.

Environmental liability.

Cleanup costs.

Future lawsuits.

A trap.

If Lucia kept asking about Elena, Arthur could make her financially responsible for land she did not know she owned.

Mara stared at the documents.

Rebecca nodded.

“Maybe more.”

Julian felt ashamed of a grandfather he barely remembered.

Charles whispered, “I didn’t know about the land.”

Anna looked at him.

“You always say that.”

He flinched.

Julian understood why she was angry.

Ignorance had become Charles’ lifelong shelter.

Never knew enough.

Never asked enough.

Never acted soon enough.

Julian said, “Can the title be corrected?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Then do it.”

Mara looked at him.

“To who?”

“Lucia’s heirs.”

She stared.

“That’s not necessary.”

“It isn’t charity.”

“It feels like it.”

Anna watched him carefully.

Julian continued.

“We fix the record.”

Mara said nothing.

Then Rebecca found another detail.

The proceeds paid for part of Mercer House’s renovation.

Julian laughed bitterly.

“So this house literally benefited from what they did to her.”

No one answered.

The amount, adjusted with interest, would be returned to Lucia’s estate.

Mara protested.

Julian said, “You told me apologies are cheap when other people pay.”

She looked at him.

“My mother said that.”

“She was right.”

Security.

Then another.

Then five.

Julian looked at Anna.

“Did you?”

“No.”

Mara shook her head.

Rebecca checked her phone.

MERCER FAMILY HID SECRET ROOM LINKED TO 1989 DISAPPEARANCE.

Julian stared.

Then Charles’ phone lit up.

A text.

You should have left the wall closed.

Julian looked at the sender.

May you like

Unknown.

Someone else still cared about the secret.
