Chapter 18 - What Happened to the Mansion

The story exploded.

National news.

Art magazines.

True-crime podcasts.

Old-money gossip columns.

Julian hated most of it.

It reopened Elena’s missing-person file.

Her statement was formally added.

Arthur’s role was documented in the historical record.

But truth could.

The trust dispute was settled without a courtroom fight.

Anna received her legal half-interest in Mercer House.

Julian expected conflict.

Instead she said:

“I don’t want to live here.”

“Neither do I.”

That surprised him.

She laughed.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

It felt like evidence.

Mara proposed something.

“Make part of it public.”

Julian frowned.

“A museum?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“A center for workers’ rights. Legal aid. Immigration help.”

Anna stared at her.

“Lucia would love that.”

Julian nodded.

“Done.”

Rebecca cleared her throat.

“It is not that simple.”

They created a nonprofit.

Not as spectacle.

As evidence.

A plaque listed Elena’s words:

He wants to be good without paying the price of being brave.

Charles read it once.

Then never again.

He moved out of Mercer House.

Not because Julian forced him.

Anna visited him occasionally.

Mara did not.

That was her right.

One evening, Julian found Mara cleaning the frame of the portrait.

He smiled.

“You still work here?”

She looked at him.

“I run facilities now.”

“Right.”

“Do not get sentimental.”

“Wasn’t planning to.”

She pointed at the portrait.

“Yes.”

“Still ridiculous.”

He laughed.

“Probably.”

Then she asked:

“Why keep it?”

Julian looked at the crack.

“Because it was the first thing in this house that told the truth.”

Mara nodded.

Then noticed something.

In the lower left corner, beneath the artist’s signature, a tiny painted symbol.

A blue square.

Julian frowned.

“That wasn’t there before.”

Mara looked closer.

Inside the square was one word.

May you like

LUCIA.

The painting held one final secret.
