Chapter 13 - A Dead Man's Apology

June sent me the recording after Vega preserved an official copy. I listened while Lily colored at the dining table.
Wallace's voice sounded weaker than I remembered.
"I thought money could make a problem go away," he said. "I treated Grace and that baby like a problem. Edward did what I asked. Victoria kept the records. Then, when I finally wanted to tell Nathan, they told me the truth would destroy him. That was a lie I was ready to believe."
My hands started to shake.
"I cannot undo what I did. I can make sure the child receives what the trust promises. I've ordered the reserve protected. Edward says the documents are in progress. I no longer trust him."
I switched off the recording. I didn't need a dying man to explain that he had been cruel. I needed him to have stopped sooner.
Nathan arrived with the sealed envelope. He handed it to me without asking to watch me open it.
Inside was a signed statement acknowledging that Wallace had threatened me with false theft allegations, plus copies of the original instructions he sent to Pierce. It wasn't forgiveness. It was evidence.
"I should have questioned him," Nathan said.
"Yes."
"I should have come looking for you."
"Yes."
"I loved you."
I stared at the envelope. "You can love someone and still fail them. I need you to understand that."
Lily came over and held up a drawing: three people under one enormous purple umbrella. She had given everyone separate shoes, as if she wanted us to be able to walk away if we needed to.
"Can I give it to Nathan?" she asked.
"It's yours," I said. "You decide."
Nathan accepted it like it was made of glass. Later that afternoon, June called with another discovery from the drive: a recorded conversation between Wallace and Victoria.

Victoria's voice was unmistakable.
"I've known where the little girl lives for four years," she said. "Don't make me show Nathan what you've done."
