Chapter 15 - The Pickup That Never Happened

Vega wouldn't tell me every detail of the police operation, and I didn't ask. I only asked that Lily not be used to catch the people who had frightened her.
"She won't be," Vega said.
Officers located the Meridian driver at a hotel near the airport. He was carrying a packet with my photograph, Lily's school schedule, a forged authorization bearing Nathan's signature, and instructions to take the child to a private residence in another state.
The driver said he'd been told I had voluntarily agreed to send Lily away for treatment. When Vega showed him the assault report, he asked for a lawyer.
"Was she going to be hurt?" Nathan asked me when I told him.
"I don't know," I said. "That's what makes it terrifying."
Nathan stood outside June's apartment, careful not to cross the threshold until Lily invited him in. He brought groceries, not jewelry. He made scrambled eggs too dry, then apologized to Lily when she said they tasted like cardboard.
"Good review," he said seriously. "I'll work on it."
For the first time, she laughed in front of him.
A few hours later, June learned that the forged authorization had been submitted using an account associated with Pierce's firm. The police obtained a warrant for records, while Nathan's independent lawyer sought an immediate court order preventing any transfer of the grandchild reserve.
"The judge set a hearing for tomorrow," June said. "We'll ask the trustee to preserve the funds until this is resolved."
That night, Victoria sent Nathan a voice message. She sounded as calm as she had on their engagement announcement.
"You can cancel the wedding," she said. "You can embarrass me. But when the newspapers print what Grace did for your father's money, you'll beg me to make it stop."

Thirty seconds later, the fire alarm sounded in June's building.
Someone had pulled it on the floor where Lily was sleeping.
