Chapter 4 - The First Time They Erased Me

At the hospital, the nurse asked how I had been hurt. I told her the truth with Lily sitting beside me, squeezing my fingers.

"I'm proud of you," Lily whispered after the nurse left.

"For what, baby?"

"You didn't say you fell."

That nearly broke me. At home, I had always taught her to tell the truth, even when it was hard. For five years, I had lived inside the largest lie of my life.

Nathan waited beyond the curtain. I could see the polished toes of his shoes. He hadn't left since the ambulance arrived.

"Can he come in?" Lily asked.

I nodded.

Nathan stepped inside and pulled a chair close, keeping his distance. "The doctor says your mom will be okay."

"Are you really my daddy?" Lily asked.

His mouth opened. No sound came. He looked at me.

"I found out I was pregnant after you left for Chicago," I said. "Your father called me into his office before I could tell you. He already knew."

"How?"

"I don't know. He had a copy of my clinic appointment. He said if I contacted you, he'd paint me as a thief and take the baby. He had a lawyer tell me it was legal."

Nathan's eyes filled, but I couldn't let his pain cover mine.

"I called you fourteen times," I continued. "Then your number changed. Every letter came back unopened."

"I was told you never wanted to speak to me."

"I wanted you every day. I just wanted her safe more."

Lily stared at her sneakers. "Mommy cried when she thought I was sleeping."

Nathan lowered his head.

His phone buzzed. A message from Pierce filled the screen: DO NOT AUTHORIZE A PATERNITY TEST. THE TRUST WILL BE TRIGGERED.

Nathan showed me the message.

May you like

"What trust?" I asked.

He said, "I think my father left more than money."
