Chapter 12 - The Woman With the Blue Folder

I didn't grab Colin's phone. I didn't need to. I had read enough to know another file existed, and that he was frightened of it.

"June," I whispered, "who handled the tenant paperwork?"

"Colin's assistant, Maren Ellis. She quit last Friday."

"Why?"

"She left crying. Said she couldn't sleep anymore."

Talia called while Frances questioned the board's lawyer. "Maren reached out to me yesterday," she said. "She has scans of the original attendance sheet. Eleven names, exactly as June said. She was afraid to give them to me unless June was safe."

"She is, for now."

"Then tell June I'm sending a message."

June's phone vibrated: YOU DID THE RIGHT THING. I'M COMING.

Before I could answer, two police officers appeared at the doorway with Pike. They had been called for a complaint that someone had assaulted Vanessa. Their expressions were careful, not theatrical. One asked my name.

"Naomi Calder. I'm the person in the video."

"We need to ask you some questions."

"Of course. Please also speak to Mr. Bennett and preserve his original recording. It starts before the kick."

Pike pointed at June. "And the girl stole confidential material."

"I copied documents involving my mother's home," June said. Her voice shook, but she kept speaking. "I can explain what I saw."

The officer looked from Pike to June. "We'll take statements. Nobody's being hauled off because someone points a finger."

For the first time that night, Pike looked uncertain.

Then Vanessa's attorney entered carrying a sealed envelope. "I have a signed statement from a board employee," he said, "swearing that June Mercado forged the documents herself."

June turned white.

"That's impossible," she whispered. "I didn't even have access to the original forms."

The attorney placed the statement on the table.

It bore Maren Ellis's signature.
