Chapter 19 - The Engagement Ends Here

Graham took the second microphone from Evelyn. "I promised to match the charity's fundraising," he said. "I didn't ask enough questions about the figures. That is my responsibility. My lawyers and the city can review every dollar."
Vanessa waited for a denial that never came.
"And the wedding?" she demanded, as if a room full of people owed her a happy ending.
Graham looked at her for a long time. "There won't be one."
A woman near the back gasped. The reporters raised their phones. I saw no victory in his face, only grief and a kind of exhausted clarity.
"You choose the housekeeper over me?" Vanessa said.
"No," he answered. "I choose not to lie to the people who trusted us. That shouldn't be a competition."
Omar Bennett supplied the complete video to the officers. They watched the seconds before the kick, Vanessa's leg rising, my hand catching her ankle, and the moment I set her foot down. They spoke separately with us and several guests. I asked that the attempted assault be formally recorded.
One officer told Vanessa she needed to accompany them for further questioning about the attack. She protested, then looked for Graham. He didn't move. The second officer remained to collect names and preserve evidence of the alleged financial scheme. Investigation was only beginning, but tonight's sale was dead.
Ada leaned against June, too tired to stand alone. "Does this mean we can stay?" she asked Priya.
"The transfer is suspended. We'll keep fighting for permanent protection. You can go home tonight."
Ada began to cry. It wasn't a beautiful movie cry. It was relief cracking through a woman who'd spent months wondering which box she'd have to pack first.
Vanessa passed me on her way out. "You ruined my life," she whispered.
"No," I said. "You thought nobody would stop you."

After the doors closed, Graham approached me with an envelope. Inside was an offer to put me in charge of his personal security.
I handed it back.
