Chapter 17 - The People Who Packed the Bags

Mrs. Ortiz did not sign the first agreement. After negotiation she accepted reinstatement, back pay, and a written assurance that cooperating with the review would not cost employees their jobs. Other workers received the same protection, published without their names.

At the cafeteria, Olivia came to apologize to the staff during a scheduled meeting. Mrs. Alvarez listened with her arms crossed.

"You made my workplace into a stage," she said. "We still had to clean it."

"I know," Olivia answered.

"Knowing is the beginning. Not the payment."

Olivia didn't argue. She agreed to cover her share of the damage through an approved restitution process. The staff chose how it would be handled; nobody made a worker perform forgiveness for an audience.

Outside, Maya asked Emma whether she was happy.

"Some days," Emma said. "Other days I hear a tray hit the floor and my chest gets tight."

"I hear you."

Emma told Maya she had started counseling. Honesty mattered more than seeming brave.

The state education agency opened a procurement inquiry. Harper Dining's district contract was temporarily administered by an outside manager while counsel reviewed the disputed extension. Charles resigned from the school board. Jonah Pike was suspended from foundation duties and later left his position; the matter was referred for possible civil recovery and criminal review. No one promised immediate convictions.

That night Helen Price sent Grant a corrected ledger. After adjustment, hundreds of student charges were being removed from accounts. Refunds would follow for families who had paid amounts they did not owe.

Emma opened Maya's account on her friend's phone, with permission. The balance read $0.00.

Maya let out a shaky breath. "Mom's going to frame that screen."

Then a new notice appeared beneath the balance: PRIOR ACCOUNT HISTORY UNAVAILABLE.
