Chapter 19 - Not a Last Word

Spring brought the kind of normal days Emma had once wanted desperately: unfinished homework, late buses, bad cafeteria jokes, and rain leaking through the gym roof.

The review continued. A civil agreement returned disputed funds to the meal program; separate investigations into the contract and falsified records remained open. The school board adopted conflict-of-interest rules and appointed parents, staff, and students to a nutrition oversight committee with access to regular reports.

Grant resigned from the foundation's procurement committee, allowing independent trustees to supervise future contracts. He didn't stop giving; he stopped confusing giving with oversight.

At a community forum, someone asked Emma what punishment she wanted for Olivia. She thought about the humiliation, the photograph on her locker, the nights when she couldn't sleep. She also thought about the day Olivia admitted she'd made a choice.

"I want the rules to mean the same thing no matter whose parents are rich," Emma answered. "That's enough for me to say publicly."

Afterward, Grant drove her to the cemetery. They brought yellow tulips for her mother. He apologized for how much time he'd spent helping other families while missing what his own daughter had endured.

Emma rested her head against his shoulder. "You came when I needed you."

"I came because I had a meeting," he said. "I should have noticed sooner."

"Then notice now."

He promised he would.

That evening an email arrived from a scholarship committee at a university Emma loved. She had been shortlisted for a program in community policy and public health. The letter emphasized her application essay, volunteer work, and academic record; Grant had not served on the panel.

Maya screamed when she heard. Emma laughed so hard she spilled tea.

Then Emma reached the last line of the message: FINAL INTERVIEWS WILL INCLUDE A QUESTION ABOUT THE CAFETERIA INCIDENT.

Her joy faltered. She had hoped, just once, to be allowed to talk about who she was beyond the worst day of her life.
