Chapter 7 - The Person Behind the Phone

Emma's father wanted to release the full pantry photograph. Emma refused.
"One child shouldn't pay for my reputation," she said.
Grant sat across from her with his hands folded. "I won't do it. But people can hurt you while you're being careful."
"They already are."
In the principal's office, a student disciplinary committee asked Emma why she had visited the pantry after hours. She explained that she'd delivered food with permission and supplied a letter from the pantry director, who confirmed her volunteer work without naming recipients.
Charles called the letter "convenient." Emma watched Principal Merritt write the word in her notes.
Nia approached Emma after school. Her cheeks were wet. She had received a threat with a photograph of her brother at the bus stop.
"They know where he gets off," Nia whispered.
Emma took her straight to the school resource officer and asked for a written report, then called Nia's mother. Nia gave the full cafeteria video to the independent investigator, not Emma, and was told how to preserve the original file.
It showed Olivia taking the tray. It showed Emma standing still. It showed Merritt looking toward the confrontation, then turning away before the crash.
The officer confirmed the video mattered but made no promises.
When Nia's mother picked her up, she hugged Emma so tightly it hurt. "You didn't make my girl be brave," she said. "You just stayed when she was scared."
That evening, the anonymous number sent a second message: THE OTHER CAMERA WAS NEVER BROKEN. ASK WHO CHECKED IT OUT.

Nia recognized the equipment inventory number in the attached photograph.
The missing camera had been signed out by a staff member using Principal Merritt's badge.
