My pregnant wife screamed—
and the entire maternity floor went into emergency lockdown.
One second earlier, my mother had been standing beside her hospital bed, furious.
Then a suitcase flew across the room.
It slammed against the bed and crashed to the floor.
Briar instantly curled around her stomach.
“Something’s wrong…”
A nurse saw everything through the glass.
She dropped her clipboard, hit the emergency button, and shouted:
“Code Gold! Abdominal trauma! Security to Room Four!”
Red lights started flashing.
Doctors came running.
My mother went completely silent.
Then I noticed the suitcase had broken open.
Inside were old documents.
Medical records.
Bank papers.
A photograph I had never seen before.
And one sealed file with my father’s name on it.
My father had been dead for eleven years.

that was what my family had always told me.
Then the nurse picked up the file, looked at the date, and whispered:
